Do not have a wedding at Hammond Castle before reading this!

Hammond Castle is a famous location for microweddings and elopements, seated on the top edge of Massachusetts in Gloucester. Constructed in the late 1920’s, the castle features inspiration from the 15th, 16th, and 18th century architecture. You can admire the various medieval notes around the property; from gargoyles, to the authentic organ pipes, stone and marble works, arches, and even a drawbridge.

And as stunning a venue that Hammond Castle is, there are some important things to note before choosing a wedding here.

Major Time Constraints‍ ‍

Hammond Castle operates on very strict time allowances. Since it is still an operational museum as well as a wedding venue, couples have to adhere to very specific times for their days. I know this seems super obvious, but a lot of couples voice that they feel like they don’t get enough time to explore the property (especially if they end up inviting family). All elopements and event rentals begin after the Museum closes at 3:30 pm. For summer events, that mean it can be QUITE BRIGHT (and hot) during peak wedding months. There is extremely little leeway for your event, and you will be told to wrap up when time is close to over.

Spacing Constraints on a Historical Property

The castle is a historical property that was not designed with the function of being a wedding venue. The bridal suite, located just off the great hall, has visible pipes all over the ceiling, and does not have great airflow unfortunately. It is also situated on the main walkway between the main floor and the great hall, so if you leave the door open people will be able to see you getting ready. You will not want to have more than 3 people in here, so I’d recommend saving it for final touch-ups and getting your dress on only. As for the groom’s suite, the situation is not much better. you’ll be getting ready at the same hallway as the museum’s guest bathrooms on the main floor. Again, if you choose to leave the door open you will be confronted by wedding guests on their way to the loo.

Doubling as a Museum

I really cannot stress this enough. This property is a museum first. That means there will be guests finishing their visits when you arrive at the property likely. There are signs on many exhibits and artifacts, as well as chained off areas, which will show in photos. You have to be very careful not to touch anything in some of the tight spaces because of this LOL. There are a lot of areas you won’t be able to access as a member of the public. But one of the biggest things couples should be aware of is that the museum is NOT ADA compliant. There are a ton of uneven stone steps you will be traversing, which will not work for your family in wheelchairs and walkers.

Lighting

There is no way to put this lightly…. the lighting in the Great Hall is not for the faint of heart. It’s my understanding that maybe couples request what color they would like for the lights maybe? Regardless, I had a wedding ceremony in here with pink lights. It made for very difficult lighting situation personally. You will either receive flash photos to offset this, or in my opinion have your ceremony outside on the lawn. However, of it is raining or too bright out this will also be a challenge. Trust me.

My Biggest Takeaways

This location will unfortunately require more planning than many other sites. Honestly, any venue that is rented will have similar limitations. I’d recommend booking a tour before making the decision to book. Although the property is a stunner, you do not want to be surprised on your wedding day. You will need a SOLID schedule with wiggle room factored in, because time really will fly. Get ready off-site, and know exactly who is squeezing into the bridal suite with you. Book a photographer that has shot here before, and who knows the property and best spots so that you’re not wasting any time.

Hammond Castle is a gorgeous place to get married. You will just need to be extremely intentional to make sure you can get the most out of your special day.
